Russia closes Polish consular company in Smolensk: Ministry

Russia stated on Friday it was shutting down Poland’s diplomatic mission within the western metropolis of Smolensk, dwelling to essential Polish memorial websites.

“Poland’s Ambassador to Russia Krzysztof Krajewski was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry and notified of the closure of Poland’s consular agency in Smolensk,” the Ministry stated.

The consular company is the consultant workplace for the Polish authorities in Smolensk.

“Warsaw’s aggressive line towards our country, which has gone beyond all civilised boundaries… is forcing us to implement a set of measures in response,” the Ministry added.

The diplomatic mission opened in 2011, following a aircraft crash in Smolensk in 2010 that killed 96 Polish officers, together with President Lech Kaczynski.

The officers had been heading to a ceremony on the Katyn memorial in a forest close to Smolensk, arrange in reminiscence of round 22,000 Polish officers killed by the Soviet political police in 1940.

The consular company has primarily been tasked with offering consular assist to Poles arriving in Smolensk and Katyn.

Poland’s Foreign Ministry in a press release revealed in a while Friday stated the Russian resolution to shut the company was “another unfriendly and incomprehensible act”.

It stated Poland “reserves the right to take appropriate action in response”, including that the workplace in Smolensk will shut on the finish of August.
