Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare dismissed issues the deal would enable China a base within the South Pacific

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare stated on Friday his authorities wouldn’t enable a Chinese army base to be in-built his nation “under its watch” as he defended a pending safety settlement with Beijing.

Mr. Sogavare dismissed issues the deal would enable China a base within the South Pacific and labelled the claims as “misinformation”.

If China was to arrange its army base within the Pacific, “it would have done so with either Papua New Guinea or Fiji,” he stated in a press release, arguing that they had been among the many first South Pacific nations to ascertain bilateral relations with Beijing.

A draft model of the settlement, leaked final week, detailed measures to permit Chinese safety and naval deployments to the Pacific island nation.
