Who is Kapil Gurjar?

Kapil Gurjar had fired two rounds in the air at the Shaheen Bagh which was the epicenter of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests.

Why in News?

Shortly after Kapil Gurjar, the man who fired shots in the air at south Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh area during the CAA protest earlier this year, joined the BJP, his membership application was cancelled.

In February, Gurjar had fired two rounds in the air at the Shaheen Bagh which was the epicenter of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests.

The 24-hour sit-in that was mainly led by women lasted for more than three months. The peaceful agitation that became a pan-India template for anti-CAA protests was called off in March in the wake of coronavirus fears and subsequent lockdown.

After opening the fire, Gurjar had also chanted “Jai Shri Ram” and said, “hamare desh me aur kisi ki nahi chalegi, sirf Hinduon ki chalegi (only Hindus shall have a say in our country, no one else).

He was arrested and sent to police custody right a day after the incident.
